Stephen Jones quoted Sylvia Baker saying that the influx of salt into the
oceans would give a maximum age to the earth's oceans o 200 million years.
This assumes that no salt is removed from the ocean. I have ordered a book
(The Naked Earth: the New Geophysics, can't remember author), which tells of
some new research which shows that the world's oceans are filtered of its
mineral content by the hydrothermal systems along the mid-oceanic ridges.
Salty water percolates through the rock, salt is removed and relatively
fresher water is returned to the ocean. Calculations show that this would
keep the oceans saltiness in balance for several billion years.
