I have read Gould's article in HTAHT pp 187-198. I can see nothing that would
suggest a genetic mechanism that could change a mesonychid into an
ambulocetus."

Stephen, I think we have gone about as far with this thread as we can. If it
is difficult for you to generalize from the information is sources like that,
there is nothing further we can discuss on this issue. There never will be a
science book which explains in detail how the insulin system works in each and
every animal on the surface of the earth. Most of those animals have slightly
different insulins and so the chemistry is ever so slightly different. But
you will not find a book which deals with pig insulin chemistry details and
then horse insulin chemistry details and then .... Science and scientists are
allowed to apply the general rule to the particular instance. There is no
book which details the orbital mechanics of jupiter as opposed to the orbital
mechanics of venus as opposed to the orbital mechanics of a binary star
system. The books teach orbital mechanics and then apply that knowledge to any
and every specific case.

I would suggest that you try to do that here.
