Well, it might be I who has the reading comprehension of Rain Man.

My claim about Pachyaena comes from the table on page 170 of Szalay and Gould
which line reads

"?Early Eocene Pachyaena ('Mesonyx obtusidens' Gromova, 1952)"

When I first wrote this, I interpreted this as being the same as Mesonyx.
After looking at this again I may have misinterpreted this and it was Gomova
who misnamed the fossil he found as Mesonyx. It would appear that Ashby is
correct here and I was wrong.

I too would like to thank Ashby for the discussion. It has been fun.
