For what it's worth, *I* was denied tenure because I refused to "tone down
the evolution angle" in my courses--including Human Evolution!--at a state
university in the Midwest. My dean was an Assembly of God member who told me
my outspokenness would hurt the school's appropriations; one or more
legislators had been in touch with him.

In academia, this amounts to a death sentence--these years, there are no
second chance jobs after you have been "judged."

I had been active in arguing for the reinstatement of public school teachers
denied renewal of contracts because they taught evolution, by the way.
