Of course, quarks are mathematical constructs. Howard V. or someone else
can correct me if I am wrong. They are a very clever mathematical
invention, introducing "particles" with fractional electrical charges,
which provide a very helpful modeling simplification for the numerous and,
initially, confusing array of subatomic particles showing up as products
of high energy physics experiments. In various combinations, according to
simple rules, they "produce" (or represent) observable subatomic
particles. Today, most physicists believe they have a physical reality as
well. Their introduction did give rise to various predictions which for
the most part have been verified.
