Having read Noll's book and several posts regarding it, I would add my voice to
those who recommend reading the work firsthand to see what he has to say to our
community. Noll's criticisms are insightful and should give us pause to consider
the way we have approached ministry and scholarship. My fear is that reaction to
the book will be like that to Charles Murray's "The Bell Curve"--those who think
they are made to look good will use it as ammunition and everybody else will
give it a cavalier dismissal. Both groups need to realize that we all desire
both biblical accuracy and cultural relevance, but we tend to be a little
unbalanced in one direction or the other. Not even the critics (Noll, Wells,
Guinness, etc.) have established THE model, and that's why we need to have this
kind of dialogue!!
