"Some tiny Homo erectus population in Africa gave rise to modern Homo
sapiens" may have been meant by Davis and Kenyon as disparaging (I can't
tell for sure from the context). But this is very consist with some models
of speciation, especially those adopted by the punctuated equilibrium
sorts.
