I have always liked TO treatment of the definition of evolutions
    http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/evolution-definition.html

Can we extrapolate to the earliest

Not sure, since the ToE only explains various mechanisms allowing a
diversity of "living" populations, not life from non-life. However, the
scripture says that God sad, "Let the earth bring forth...", is that life
from non-life? Biological evolution only addresses life after it was
    "brought forth."
