    I thought this preamble was important: For many years I have conducted a
    survey in the non-majors biology
    courses I taught before we begin the topic of evolution.

    If the survey results would be the same after the course, they need a new
    teacher. I think you could find similar results for other courses where
    the students had no prior knowledge of the material. Who was buried in
    Grant's tomb? Unless a typical high school student had studied American
    history, how would he know? (My daughter is a typical high school student,
    so I have special insight.)

    You would think a college student would be better prepared, but Howard said
    his friend taught at a "state" university. Ah, what state?
