Next message: Vernon Jenkins: "Re: ASA Perspective"
ASAers and ACGers,
This is a call out for a qualified someone to fill in a missing
link.
I think there is a missing piece in this grand puzzle entitled
"the interaction of science with faith". That missing
piece is a single book, one written by a Christian biologist or
paleontologist (or ??) scientist that lays out specifically the evidence
for evolution as science. It would likely need to then briefly
discuss the possible implications for Christian theology, otherwise it
might leave the author with too many question. But it does not have
to fully deal with the theological implications of evolution, as that
might require its own volume. I see this book bringing multiple
lines of evidence from the fossil record/embryonic
development/genetics/whatever to establish a strong case for biological
evolution. I see it as written for the Christian layman, not the
scientist necessarily, although, I myself would love to read a book like
this. There is already a great book arguing for the antiquity of
the earth (Dave Young's Christianity and the Age of the Earth), a topic
which is somewhat of a prerequisite for arguments of evolution.
When non-geologists ask me what to read to learn about the age of the
earth question, that is one that I point them to. But I don't know
what to tell people when they want the same kind of thing for
evolution. I do not believe that a textbook is the answer for this
- instead I see a need for something more engaging and designed
specifically for a Christian audience. There are lots of books by
Christians arguing against evolution. But is there one arguing the
case for it? Not to my knowledge.
If you would like to reply to me, please note that I no longer receive
messages posted to the ASA list. And if anyone would like to
forward this to the ACB list, feel free - I couldn't find the address on
the web. Yours,
