Michael Tuomey, in his underfunded Report on the Geology of South Carolina, published in 1848, includes a section on the compatibility of Moses with then-modern geological views. He identifies perceived conflict as a thing of the past; however, the fact that he felt the need to argue for this position suggests that he may have suspected YEC views were not fully abandoned as of yet by the South Carolina legislature or other potential readers.
The failure of the legislature to fund publication of the plates probably contributed substantially to the long-term lack of knowledge about Eocene faunas in South Carolina. However, as this gave me the opportunity for my undergraduate and M.S. theses, I suppose I should not complain too much.
