The drillship

I know this is a bit off topic here but I spent today on a brand-new state
of the art drillship anchored about 50 miles off the Texas coast. My
company will use it to drill the next well and it is the first well drilled
by this ship. It cost $450 million to build, is 742 feet long, 138 feet
wide and about 10 stories tall (not including the derrick). It has 6
generators that can supply 35 megawatts of power, uses 12 tons of fuel a
day just to stand still 120 tons per day to move. The tank can hold 4500
tons of fuel. The block and tackle can lift well over a million and a half
pounds of drill pipe. It has no anchor as it uses thrusters to stay put. we
will use it over the next 5 years to drill wells as deep as 28,000 feet in
water depths of up to 10,000 feet. It takes 3 men to actually drill the
wells. Today it is picking up supplies including several thousand feet of
drill pipe, drilling mud and in a week this ship will be halfway across the
Gulf of Mexico from Galveston, drilling a new well.

Compared to this ship, the ark was a midget at 450 feet long, 75 feet wide
and 45 feet tall.
