Defining life

Friends and Colleagues

Many biologists have for years suggested that "defining life" was an
impossible task. Most have agreed that we can characterize life but we find
that the characteristics we often choose are shared by things "not alive."

The hope of finding a definition by some of us today reminds me of
my enthusiasm to think I could suggest a solution to a colleague's research
difficulties several years ago. After consultation we found that he had
already thought of every option I had to offer and had found the lacking.
Therefore, I am skeptical of claims by some of us that we will find a
definition today.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God
did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the
world through him."
John 3:16-17 NIV
