Near extinction of humanity?

There is a new report that suggests that the explosion of Toba 71,000 years
ago killed all but a very few humans, maybe as low as 15,000 survived. It
would be a volcanic winter. Such a theory would explain the mtDNA data as
there would be a population bottleneck. It would not do well with
explaining the widespread distribution of humanity, both anatomically
modern and Neanderthal during that time. Neanderthals were not wiped out
during that period and they were the ones who lived in the worst place to
survive a volcanic winter. Anyway more information can be found at either.
