attended, Calvin DeWitt (UWisconsin and Au Sable Institute) commented
that "what God created was good, not "goody."" (I hope I quoted him
correctly). This is in line with John's statement and Calvin meant that
a "good" creation should not be equated with a creation-without-death.
In other words, the behaviour in the animal kingdom before the fall may
not have been very much different from that today, i.e. survival of the
fittest.
