Ok, I finally went and looked this thing up. I had to look in about 3 books
to find the explanation. I really can't look everything up so I would
suggest that occasionally it is up to you to look at more than one book on
a topic and you might find your own answers. Let me clarify the
description. I would refer you would refer you to Paul Murdin, "End in
Fire" (Cambridge University Press, 1990), pp 196-204. On page 197 he has a
diagram of how the light echos are formed.

The dust which produces the light echo is not quite at the same distance as
the supernova and the inner ring but they aren't far from it. One can draw
it as.

The reflection points along the old rings of dust lie along a parabolic path.
