Apparently there is a report in this week's Nature about the oldest animal
life. It is either the embryos of animals or the animals were quite small.
All I have seen is the report on the New York Times at

http://www.nytimes.com/yr/mo/day/news/national/sci-oldest-animal-fossils.html

These animals are found in rocks dating 30-40 million years prior to the
Cambrian and thus prior to the Cambrian Explosion.
