These are in nodules. The formation of such nodules can be induced by the
chemical effects of decay (especially changes in pH and oxygen levels), so
that the decaying organism causes its own fossilization. The Mazon Creek
concretions in coal are a similar phenomenon. However, I don't know of any
concretions in the Green River-the warm, saline, low-oxygen model is
probably more relevant. There are some good modenr analogues for the
environment, but I can't think of taphonomic studies.
