Ruse's evolutionary metaphysics

I'm curious -- Have secular scholars developed the "metaphysics of
evolution" concept proposed by Michael Ruse a few years ago?
In mainstream history of science, for example, it would be considered
naive to claim that there is no metaphysics, so (given this perspective)
Ruse's claim should simply be taken for granted, and the characteristics
and influence of the metaphysical foundation should be analyzed. To
construct a defense that "there is no metaphysics" would not be taken
seriously by historians.

So what has been the actual response?
And how much difference did it make that this was proposed by Ruse, not
by a theist?
