GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sami Kapanen and Steve Leach scored nineseconds apart late in the second period, leading the CarolinaHurricanes to a 5-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, whosuffered their seventh straight loss. Kapanen ripped a shot fromthe high slot past Arturs Irbe for his fifth goal of the season,tying the game at 3-3 with 5:54 left in the second period.

Off the ensuing faceoff, Kevin Dineen took a shot from the rightfaceoff circle. Irbe made a stick save, but the rebound went to astreaking Leach just outside the left circle and he beat thegoaltender to the stick side for his third tally of the season.Gary Roberts, who assisted on Kapanen's tally, added an insurancegoal with 1:44 to play. He entered the Vancouver zone with KeithPrimeau on a two-on-one. Roberts kept the puck all the way andfired a blast past for his second goal in as many games.

"We did a better job covering tonight. We didn't give them threeto four chances," Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. "We have alittle more confidence now. Our bench did not collapse, that wasa key. We had a lot of breakaway chances tonight, and our gamedidn't change a whole lot."

Vancouver's Mark Messier tied the game at 2-2 with his sixthgoal, a power-play tally at 4:38 of the second period. Messier,who has four goals in his last three games, assisted on MarkusNaslund's third of the season with 7:32 left in the period togive Vancouver the lead.

"It's no fault on the effort, the guys work hard," Messier said."It's not fun when you're not winning. I don't care if I score 10goals, because we're losing. The bottom line is winning, andanything else is not acceptable."

Pavel Bure, who leads the Canucks with 15 points, assisted onboth second-period goals.

Trevor Kidd made 21 saves for Carolina, which had a season highin goals. He started in place of Sean Burke, who was releasedbefore the game after his arrest Sunday for assault.

Irbe turned aside 27 shots for the Canucks, who took the lead7:21 into the game when Dave Scatchard notched his second goal ofthe season. Carolina's Jeff Brown scored his second of the seasonwith the man advantage with 10:25 left in the first. Paul Ranheimknocked in a short-handed tally just 46 seconds later.
