There is very little Upper Paleolithic art from the open air sites. Only from
within the deep recesses of caves. Since it is reasonable to suspect that
they also made art in the daylight, most authorities believe that such art did
not survive until today. But some authors have pointed out that if that were
applied to all the hominids, it might be that we have the Art explosion of the
Upper Paleolithic NOT because mankind suddenly started making art, but because
he suddenly started making art in CAVES where it could be preserved til today.
In this view, Neanderthal may simply have made art in the light of day and not
in deep dark caves.
