I find it extremely hard to believe that the AVERAGE depth of the
preflood Mediterranean basin was 5 KM which is about 15,500 feet. Is
this really true? This is astounding given that the lowest land on
earth today (the dead sea) is only 1200 feet or so below sea level if I
remember correctly.

Can anyone calculate the temperature at this depth? It must have been
much hotter than death valley and a miserable place to live, except for
the river edges as you pointed out to me earlier.
